We often come across a problem when we are operating many devices in our home such as Television, Blu-ray Player, Cable box, Surround sound tuner & DVR. We have to use at least 3 remotes to control all of these. Then we have to maintain a big list to know whether each component is working correctly. These associated headaches have created an Entire Industry of super remotes But what about our Mobile Powerhouses....Can our smart phones control our home entertainment systems?
Yes. Its a promise of Peel, a Santa Clara based start up that is looking to help you to control the whole entertainment system using your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android Device. The company has launched its first product- the peel fruit - which you can buy online or in Apple store for $99.
The plastic 'fruit' as a middleman between your iPhone and the Television Components. The peel uses WiFi connection to relay the commands from your phone to the fruit. Then it sends the appropriate infrared signals to all the devices. You can control every thing using a peel application in your phone.
Based on the way how Peel works, you have to place the fruit in a place where it can see all the devices. If you have many components, it will take at least 10 minutes. the peel allows you to browse your shows using a slick, visual interface that allows you to flick between show listings on your phone or ipad, but only when you are watching Live Cable.
Peel have signed a partnership with TiVo that will allow the app to navigate through shows you have recorded to your DVR, and it is planning to launch Netflix integration in Q3 in 2011. It also provides you with some external features, like the ability to tell your friends what you are watching currently.
