Mimicking the amazing abilities of a 'water strider'- a long legged insect that skims across pond and lakes surfaces, an astonishing aquatic micro robot is introduced by the researchers at Harbin Institute of Technology, that can walk on water surface. Its a vast improvement over other previous devices. Its application areas include military spy missions, water pollution monitoring etc.
The micro robot weighs as much as 390 water striders. It stands on water, walks and runs effortlessly on its surface. It doesn't sink when placed on water. It has ten water-repellent(super hydrophobic), wire legs and two movable, oar like legs propelled by 2 miniature motors.
Its a dream for the humans to walk on water surface but now it is possible with the bionic micro robot. Other scientists have made plenty of aquatic devices based on water strider but no one has found a way to make water walking robots. They are practical, agile and inexpensive.
