Jason Giddings, an inventor and engineer, introduced an amazing concept of Multitouch Keyboard and mouse which is purely made of Glass and Metal. Using the same technology as biometric systems that capture finger prints, Jason has created a Keyboard and mouse with multi-touch functionality that is been put up on Kick-starter. These multi-touch peripherals have no moving parts and they are rechargeable Lithium batteries and completely wireless.
The technology used here is "FTIR(Frustrated Total Internal Reflection)".It is a touch screen technology which uses a series of LEDs at the bottom edge of each device to make infrared light bounce inside the thick panels of glass. When our fingers make contact with the glass, it frustrates the internal reflection redirecting the IR light downwards. There it is captured by a simple camera which is placed at the base. Then the images captured by camera are processed to determine where the fingers have made contact.
This device runs on open source software. It means any developer can potentially manipulate it beyond the functionality of other multi-touch devices. A user can push the number tab off the keyboard to dedicate that area for some other things like music mixing or video editing. This will maximize the functionality of the Keyboard and mouse.
And you need not worry about the minor accidents such as coffee spills and doughnut on the peripherals because they are designed to be resistant to such accidents. The aounds can be turned on or off as per user's choice.
Name the Device
One interesting thing is that you are given a chance to name the device only if you can afford to pledge $10(approx Rs. 520). Anyone who pledges $10 or $25 will have a chance to submit their ideas on what to name this device and the one who win will get a complete multi-touch keyboard and mouse combo.
