The Elfoid is a Human shaped cell phone that tickles when it rings. It is developed at the Osaka University with the help of Japan's Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute(ATR). It is developed by the robotics expert, Hiroshi Ishiguro. Ishiguro has been in the Headlines before, for creating a lifelike robotic doppelgangers. The Elfoid is a mix of mini humanoid, telepresence robot & cell phone. It is developed on the basis of Telenoid robot of last year.
The Elfoid is designed to be stuffed in your pocket. It is basically a cell phone shaped as a vaguely human torso & head. You can put it in your pocket and it tickles you when it rings. The 20cm long Elfoid has a number of control Buttons that are hidden behind its skin. You can talk into its Belly and then it speaks to you in response, playing the voice of whoever is on the other line through its face.
The Elfoid has a camera that captures emotions on your face and also your head movements. It means that it replicates not only your voice but also your "Feelings". It makes you feel that you are not Holding the Elfoid, but that person you are conversing with.
The ATR Hopes to have a commercial version of the phone to be ready within 5 years. They are planning to equip the future Elfoids with a range of motors, sensors & other bells & whistles to boost the level of realism
